Skills vs MCP
A skill teaches an agent how to do a job. An MCP server gives the agent new tools to do it. They work well together.
Side by side
| Agent skills | MCP servers | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A folder with a SKILL.md file | A program that speaks the Model Context Protocol |
| What it adds | Know-how and steps | Tools and data, like an API or a database |
| Runs code? | Only if the skill includes scripts | Yes, the server is a running process |
| Setup | Copy a folder | Install and configure a server |
| Loads | On demand, when a task matches | When the agent connects to the server |
Use a skill when
The agent already has the tools. It just needs to know your steps, style, or rules.
Use MCP when
The agent needs to reach something new. A service, an account, or live data.
Use both
A skill can tell the agent how to use an MCP tool well. Learn more in What are agent skills.
