Which agents support agent skills?

Claude, Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenClaw all read SKILL.md skills. Each one follows the open Agent Skills standard published at agentskills.io, so the same skill folder works in all of them. Only the folder path changes from tool to tool. The table below gives each path and links to that tool's own docs.

Where does each tool look for skills?

ToolProject folderPersonal folderDocs
Claude Code.claude/skills/~/.claude/skills/code.claude.com/docs/en/skills
Claude on claude.aiUpload a ZIP in Customize > SkillsUpload a ZIP in Customize > Skillssupport.claude.com
Codex and ChatGPT.agents/skills/$HOME/.agents/skills/learn.chatgpt.com/docs/build-skills
Cursor.agents/skills/ or .cursor/skills/~/.agents/skills/ or ~/.cursor/skills/cursor.com/docs/context/skills
Gemini CLI.gemini/skills/ or .agents/skills/~/.gemini/skills/ or ~/.agents/skills/geminicli.com/docs/cli/skills
GitHub Copilot.github/skills/, .claude/skills/ or .agents/skills/~/.copilot/skills/ or ~/.agents/skills/docs.github.com
OpenClawskills/ or .agents/skills/ in the workspace~/.agents/skills/docs.openclaw.ai/tools/skills

Each skill sits in its own folder inside these paths, with SKILL.md at the top of that folder.

Which folder works in the most tools?

The .agents/skills folder works in five tools: Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI, GitHub Copilot and OpenClaw. Claude Code uses .claude/skills instead. Cursor and Copilot read .claude/skills too, so a project that keeps skills there already covers three tools.

How do I check that a skill loaded?

Run /skills in Claude Code or Codex, and run /skills list in Gemini CLI. In Cursor, you type / in Agent chat and look for the skill name.

Which other tools list skills support?

The agentskills.io site names more clients. They include VS Code, Kiro, Hermes Agent, ZeroClaw, Junie, OpenCode, OpenHands, Goose, Amp, Letta, Roo Code, TRAE, Factory and Tabnine. We have not read each of their docs yet, so check the tool's own docs for its folder path. In VS Code, skills run through Copilot agent mode.

FAQ

Does one skill work in every agent?

The file format is the same everywhere. A skill can name what it needs in an optional compatibility field, such as a product or system packages. Read that field before you copy a skill into a new tool.

Where should a team keep shared skills?

Keep them in the project folder inside the repo. Everyone who clones the repo then gets the same skills.

Do I have to pick one tool?

You do not. You can copy the same folder into the path for each tool you use.
